How pickleball scoring works
Pickleball does not use tennis's 15/30/40 or deuce. You play games to 11 points, win by two, and there is no cap — a game can run past 11. A match is a single game or best of three. Two scoring systems are in use: rally scoring and traditional side-out scoring.
Rally scoring vs side-out scoring
In rally scoring, every rally is worth a point to whoever wins it, and the winner serves next — fast and simple, and increasingly common. In traditional side-out scoring only the serving side can score; when the server loses a rally it is a side-out and the serve passes over with no point. Both play to 11, win by two; some events use 15 or 21.
Doubles serving and the 0-0-2 call
In doubles side-out, both partners serve before the side-out, so the score is called as three numbers — serving score, receiving score, then the server number (1 or 2). The first serving turn of a game starts on the second server, which is why every game opens 0-0-2. Singles calls just two numbers, server's score first.
