How badminton scoring works
Badminton uses rally scoring: every rally is a point for whoever wins it, whether they served or not. A game is played to 21 points and you must win by two. Matches are the best of three games — first to two games takes the match.
The 30-point cap
There is one exception to win-by-two: a game is capped at 30. If the score reaches 29-29, the very next point wins it at 30-29. So from 20-20 the game continues until someone is two clear points ahead, but it never goes past 30.
Who serves, and from which side
The side that wins a rally serves the next one. The server uses the right service court when their score is even (0 counts as even) and the left when it is odd, so the board shows the correct court for you. Since rally scoring was adopted in 2006 there is no separate second-server system as there once was.
